BLACK LAVA FIELDS VISITOR CENTRE

The design intent was to create a place that is warm and inviting for visitors. It was intended that the exterior of the building would blend in and follow the roughness and unevenness of the Black Lava Fields. A combination of light and dark spaces would parallel the conditions of Iceland. A contrast between protection and exposure drove the design, as the visitor centre was to be a place that conveys protection. The views needed to be showcased regardless of the weather.
